Columbia Martial Arts Classes for Teens and Adults

A Note From Our Instructor

Sensei Charles Harriday

THANK YOU for considering our Martial Arts school.

I’ve seen so many different kinds of people come through our doors – from the very overweight to the ultra-shy. We’ve had people start class because they want to be prepared to defend themselves if needed and even people who start class because they’ve already been victims of a violent attack. The thing that ties all of these people together is that I’ve seen Martial Arts classes help every single one of them find their inner strength, peace, and confidence.

We’ve seen people overcome serious personal challenges like losing significant weight. We’ve seen people feel supported by meeting and interacting with other people who share their challenges. We regularly see people gaining unreal confidence not just in their ability to defend themselves, but in their everyday lives.

Take a look at what we do. See if our philosophy on the Martial Arts mat lines up with your goals and if what we teach would be beneficial in your life.

Again, THANK YOU for considering Martial Arts. For our instructors and students, it’s been one of the best things they’ve ever done, and I think it’s possible that it could be the same for you.

Work Pressure, Family Needs, Health Concerns, Time Demands...

Sound Familiar?

Self Defense isn’t just physical. It’s also mental, spiritual and emotional. Living your life the way you want isn’t always easy.

When we first meet a new student at our school, the signs of daily life in the 21st Century are usually pretty (painfully) obvious:

Focus Issues

Having trouble focusing isn’t just a “kid thing”. The ability to hone in on and complete a task is vital for our work success, family success, and life success. In our Martial Arts classes, you’ll gain laser sharp focus that you’ll take everywhere you go.

Lack of Social Interaction

We’re humans – we’re not supposed to be shut up in a cubicle all day, only to come home and turn on the TV (then go to bed and repeat the cycle again and again). The kinds of things you can learn – the knowledge you can gain from interacting with your peers in a supportive environment is amazing.

Lack of Motivation

You can’t just sign up at a big box gym and expect to achieve the kinds of results you truly want. You could hire a personal trainer for $100’s/hr, or you could join a class where you’re driven by not just your own motivation, but by your friends, instructors, and the culture of success that we foster in our school.

Lack of Confidence

As we say in our classes, Confidence is Cultivated. That means that if you want that next promotion at work, or the respect of people you admire – or even to just be able to hold your head up in your daily life, you’re going to have to work for it. And we can show you how.

Lack of Perseverance

We’re all guilty of quitting when things start to get challenging. But in our classes, you’ll be motivated by instructors who know exactly what you need. They’ll drive you to reach deep within yourself and help you create an unwavering perseverance that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Silently Dying

“Health” isn’t just a new buzzword. Our population is slowly dying of heart disease, chronic illnesses and worse. Don’t expect to beat the statistics unless you take action. Even if you don’t join our classes, try something! But if you do join, you’ll know that you’re on a personal path that you, your spouse, your kids, and everyone around you can be proud of.

But There's Hope!

We’ve specifically designed our classes to help you break through to new levels of health and happiness. You’ll be able to work through your daily challenges with strength, focus, and poise (even if you’re never “attacked”).

Finally Achieve the Results You’ve Always Wanted

Physical Strength

A Healthy body is a Strong body. So many people just want to “lose weight”, but they don’t realize that that requires building muscle. More muscle means you’ll burn more calories (even when resting), be more mobile, and look better.

The Ability to Defend Yourself Mentally, Emotionally AND Physically

If you ever need to, you will absolutely be able to defend yourself physically. The Martial Arts moves you’ll learn in class will arm you with a sense of security that our students get to carry with them everywhere they go. We sincerely hope you never have to use it; but if you do, you’ll be ready.

Soaring Self Esteem

One of the most important things you’ll earn in our classes is a tremendously positive sense of self. This isn’t just kid stuff. Low Self Esteem, if we’re being honest, hurts just as much, or maybe even more, as adults. You’ll be able to fend off the emotional onslaught of judgment from others, set appropriate boundaries in your work and personal life, and eventually, through conquering our Martial Arts class, know that you’ve conquered yourself.

Group Support

The value of working through your challenges with a group of peers who are all focused on the same goals cannot be overstated. You WILL be held accountable, and this time you WILL achieve your goals. We (the instructors and other students) won’t let you shy away from the things you want to accomplish; we’ll be there every step of the way.

We Treat You Like You

Adult Karate Student Getting CertificateWhat Does That Mean And Why Does It Help?

Here’s the deal: We are all unique!
Some of us are tall, some short, some easily prone to extra weight, and some can eat like 11-year-olds and not gain a pound. Applying a one size fits all solution to your health and fitness goals will not work. You need a tailored solution, but like most people, you probably don’t have the time or energy to seek out and implement some “perfect” plan that’ll be the silver bullet you’ve always wanted. Chances are, the perfect plan doesn’t even exist.
So what to do? Get on a fad diet? Join a gym you know you won’t go to? If you’re like most people, the answer is just put it off – meaning nothing in your life changes.

We Get To Know You; The Real You

Our instructors have been teaching Martial Arts for years. They’ve seen it all. They’re good at helping people feel comfortable in the group atmosphere of the class, while still setting proper expectations at the individual level.

Everyone in every class is looking for something different, and Martial Arts is the only activity that even comes close to being able to help everyone. Our instructors have a natural knack for helping you take the new Martial Arts skills you learn and apply them to you and your goals. The result is you finally getting a plan that works for you

Our Holistic Approach

Most fitness and health programs focus on one area and try to “fix” something, isolating “it” from the rest of “you.” The problem with that is that even if it’s successful, it won’t stick.

We take a holistic approach, meaning we help you address what Health Promotion professionals call the…

The 6 Dimensions of Wellness

Physical

People focus on this a lot, and if you’re looking for physical change, you’ll see it. We WILL make you stronger, faster, more flexible, and in the process, you’ll start to look better and feel better.

Spiritual

We don’t mean Religious (nothing about our classes is Religious), we mean Spiritual. Are you able to connect with your inner sense of peace and calm? Or do you feel like having control is challenging? Our classes will help you find your inner self through hard work and overcoming challenges.

Social

Let’s face it: It’s not always easy to make friends. For some reason, we only think about kids needing social interaction – but us adults need it too! We’re not supposed to just be shoved into a cubicle all day. Interacting, making friends, learning and contributing, all of these things will dramatically improve your quality of life.

Emotional

So you can defend yourself from “bad guys”. Cool, but so what? What about the daily challenges we all face, such as judgment from others, challenging work situations, and family stress? Being emotionally fit is vital.

Environmental

It may seem strange to think of a Martial Arts class helping you with your Environmental Wellness, but your environment often shapes not only the way you look at the world but how you interact with it as well. Regularly attending a class where you step into a culture of success and positivity will help.

Mental

Staying mentally sharp is often the difference between life and death in a self-defense situation. Now, you’re not always going to be in a situation like that, but the mental benefits of training regularly will spill over into your life outside of class. Our students say they feel more aware and connected in their daily lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get hit/get hurt?

No…..unless you want to! Every student is on their own journey. We have young, strong students who love to take their training way past what most people do. But for the vast majority of our students (95%+), getting hurt isn’t an option (plus its not much fun). In our classes, safety is paramount. There’s no more of a chance of you getting hurt here than there is at a gym or jogging down your neighborhood street.

How often do I need to come to class?

Our programs fit into almost any schedule (remember, all of the other students who already take classes with us are super busy too!). We have students who are successful in our program at only one day a week, and we have students who are so addicted to love class that they’re here every day.

Can I try it before I sign up?

We always start with a Trial Program. It’s really important not only for you to be able to make sure our program will be beneficial, but also for us to be sure we can appropriately meet your goals.Because this is introductory time is so important, and because it’s mandatory for all new students, spaces in our trial program are often very limited. So if you want a space, please be sure to sign up for one! If there are no spaces, we’ll put you on the waiting list.

I haven’t been active in years. Do I need to do anything before enrolling?

No. Although we definitely suggest maintaining an active lifestyle, if you haven’t exercised in years, our beginner classes are perfect for you. We specifically focus that class on helping students not only learn the basic foundations of martial arts but on building basic physical endurance, strength, and flexibility. Before you know it, you’ll be looking and feeling fantastic.

What should I wear/bring to class?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing; something you can move easily in. Also, a water bottle is a great idea. Remember, we’re going to be working!

If I like it, how does the signing up work?

If you enjoy the trial and you think classes will be beneficial, we will show you our different program options (there are multiple different scheduling options, payment options, and attendance options). We’ll look together at what option works best, and get you enrolled.

I have a injury/disability/challenge

You and nearly everyone else in the class. Rarely do fully healthy people enroll! Our classes are set up to work for each individual student. Although we’re positive that 99% of people reading this are right for our classes, during your Trial we will be able to tell you for sure.

What is your class schedule?

Times vary depending on age, skill level, etc.View our Schedule
